Ways to deal with New Year’s Eve during a divorce

by | Dec 9, 2016 | divorce

Getting a divorce can be a tiring, difficult experience. If you’re in the process of a divorce when New Year’s Eve rolls around, that can be hard as well. Your friends might want to go out and party, but you, newly single yet still married legally, are in a rough spot. You won’t likely head to any parties with your ex, so what can you do to get through the celebrations in good spirits?

One idea is to hang out with other singles. You may not be officially single yet, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go out and have a good time. It’s a good time to meet people that you might want to get to know better after you divorce, too.

If you can’t stomach heading out with singles or couples’ friends, consider making New Year’s Day your main holiday instead. New Year’s Day has a slow pace, and there are still some shops and restaurants open. You can ask individual friends or family members to hang out with you and forego the night before completely. Many people enjoy going to a movie to celebrate the New Year, while others grab a cup o’ Joe at a local café.

If you’d rather be alone to get away from talking about your divorce, consider making arrangements for a great spa night or indulge yourself by buying a fancy meal or renting your favorite movie. Take time for yourself, unwind and enjoy your holiday. When you’re feeling more relaxed, you’ll be able to return to dealing with your divorce in a few days with a refreshed mind.
