Marrying young can lead to financial stress

On Behalf of | Aug 15, 2019 | divorce

Money is often cited as a major reason for divorce. When a couple cannot make ends meet and wind up facing a fair amount of financial stress, they often start heading for divorce. That type of pressure takes a toll on a marriage.

That’s just one reason why many experts note that you’re taking a risk when you get married young, such as before graduating from college. The divorce rate is quite high for those who get married so early, and one reason for that high rate is that the couple may face a lot of financial stress right out of the gate.

Just paying for a wedding can cost thousands of dollars. Can you afford it? Even if you can — or if your parents pay — how do you plan to pay the rent, buy groceries, buy insurance, make car payments and much more?

If you’re still in college, school is basically a full-time job. Yes, you may work part-time on the side, but those jobs tend not to pay much and putting in 10-20 hours a week is not a significant income. In that regard, you would be far better off to wait until you graduate and you can both start your real careers, giving you the type of financial stability that you just do not have in college.

Of course, you can run into financial stress at any age. If you do, and if it ends up leading to divorce, make sure that you are well aware of all of the legal steps you need to take and what rights you have.
