Can you rescue your marriage when you’re on the verge of divorce?

On Behalf of | Aug 9, 2021 | Firm News

Many people are reluctant to officially end their marriage even if the relationship seems hopelessly broken. They want to be sure that they tried everything possible to salvage it before heading to a divorce lawyer. If there are children involved, that can also be a powerful reason for a couple to try to work things out.

If your marriage is failing, is there anything you can do to revive it? Experts say that there are strategies you can try.

6 ways to reboot your marriage

The success of these suggestions may depend on your particular circumstances. See what works best for you and your partner.

  1. Think about what you liked about your spouse when you first met. What qualities did you find appealing about this person? What would attract you to them today?
  2. Don’t totally rely on the other person for your happiness. That’s a big expectation to have of anyone. Make sure that your marital problems aren’t a reflection of some inner turmoil or dissatisfaction that only you can fix.
  3. Stop taking each other for granted. Get a “date night” going and try to invest in each other as individuals again.
  4. Create some sensible boundaries and stick to them. This can also help you both manage your expectations and leave each other room to grow.
  5. Find an enjoyable activity to do together. If you’ve simply fallen out of step with each other, it may be time to find some hobby or pastime that you can both enjoy.
  6. Show your partner you care. Bestow a few compliments from time to time, or surprise your spouse with a weekend in the country. Do something to indicate that the romance is still alive.

Keep in mind that you are only half of the equation. If your spouse isn’t willing to try, there’s not much you can do.

Deciding to end your marriage after all?

Maybe you’ve made a sincere attempt to save your marriage already. If it failed, facing that painful reality alone is hard. Fortunately, you don’t have to get through your divorce on your own. Experienced legal guidance can help.
